30 Days to Zero Waste (Day 3: Reduce Fast Food)

Every time my husband and I  pick up trash in our neighborhood, we consistently find that 95% of the trash we pick up is from fast food, mostly cups. We can easily fill the trunk of my car within a mile radius. It’s frustrating. I wish there were some way to hold these fast food companies accountable for their own waste instead of companies blaming us for their cradle-to-grave package designs. Until such legislation exists, we have to hold ourselves accountable.

 

Not only is fast food unhealthy, it creates a ton of garbage! Just think, in one visit alone the food will come wrapped in paper, shoved into a plastic bag or paper sack that is stuffed with paper napkins, plastic straws, plastic cutlery, and plastic wrapped condiments. And these items are only used for a very, very short amount of time. After you’re done eating, you toss all of that packaging right into the trash can. Did you know the biggest contributor to the waste (49%) floating in the oceans is from fast food? I know if you are accustomed to eating fast food several times in a week that completely eliminating it might be rather difficult so, lessening it is still a win. Instead of fast food, opt for wholesome meals with lots of fruits and veggies. You will find that better food comes in less packaging and you’ll feel better too!

 

Now, I understand that many of us live busy lives and sometimes, eating out is the only option. In that case, be prepared to create as little disposable waste as possible. Use your own reusable cup for drinks, ask to eat in rather than take your food to go, have the restaurant put your food in your own containers, or simply ensure that the disposable packaging you use doesn’t get sent to the landfill by composting or recycling it.

    I'm stressing out a little bit. I promised I'd treat someone to coffee today in exchange for looking over a short story I wrote and giving me their opinions on it.

    While I use my own reusable starbucks tumbler(the place we're meeting is not a sbux) I'm worried that it'd be weird if I brought them my spare. Also, what do I do if they don't finish their drink before we're done? I mean the tumbler cost me $16. I kinda don't want to risk losing it. I don't get to see this particular person very often unlike my best friends. 🙁

  2. I definitely understand! 🙂 It can be sticky when trying to sway your friends but my rule of thumb is I never try to impose anything on them. Since this is my life choice I feel that leading by example is the most effective way to sway them. Most of the times when I meet up with friends, they always bring their reusable cups even if they don't typically just to show that they support my efforts. Hope this helps! 🙂

  3. So I have to eat out several times a week. (I’m a social worker who’s schedule is insane and never constant) I found a few things to help with eating at them:

    Bring your own drinking container -tumbler? Favorite cup? All you have to do is say you would like a drink but you brought your own cup. Show them your cup so they know what size it is equivalent to.

    Tell them that you don’t need a bag or anything, just the specific food you ordered. Or bring your own reusable bag and let them know you already have a bag for food.

    *You probably have to actually go in to the place so you can speak to someone face to face- to be able to show them your items so they understand what is going on. Drive throughs tend to get confused. And it slows down the line.
