30 Days to Zero Waste (Day 21: Grow Your Own Food)

Growing your own food is one of the most rewarding, sustainable ways you can get package free produce into your kitchen. How much more local can it get, right? If you have a yard, putting in a garden is very easy. Till up a spot or build raised garden beds, add some of that compost you’ve been working on, plant the seeds of your choice and reap the benefits! The money savings alone is a very good reason to start growing your own food! Having my own garden has allowed me to grow an abundance of produce then can them into items that I’ll use throughout the year. For example, I always grow about 3 tomato plants so I can make and can spaghetti sauce, tomato paste, ketchup, tomato sauce, and just plain crushed tomatoes. And all it took was a dollars worth of seeds that I have luckily found sold in bulk at a local greenhouse. You could also start saving seeds from this years harvest to grow for next year’s.

I know a lot of you probably live in an apartment so don’t think that prevents you from being able to grow your own food as well! Start with simple things like growing some herbs on your window sill or stick your celery “butts” and almost used green onions into water to watch them come back to life. There are also several innovative companies that are working to make apartment/urban farming a lot more feasible like LettuceEvolve!
